If you don't have enough mana to cast a spell, you can still raise your skill by repeatedly casting the failed spell. This apparently does not happen if the target is dead.

That's not good, only successful casts should advance skill levels.

This is still happening, at least for Flood.

I found the issue so it should be fixed with the next release.

ETA on that next release? From what I've been reading from you, sounds like what you've got fixed now is worthy of a new point release! (Please)

I noticed that I have a combo attack that does magic damage. I'm not sure if that because I chose to have some magical power(an inherent power?). Just thought I'd mention it since there was no explanation for this attack. I chose summoning & abjuration. If it is a inherant attack maybe you could attach a feature so you can attune the basic magic attack to a form of magic your using. Perhaps summoning could have a random chance to summon a hindrance based on character lvl at the opponent.
Since abjuration is protective then maybe something like it acts like a hate control spell-lowering the chance of the mob attacking you or mitigating some damage.

Combo Attack is pseudo-magical, it actually uses the Hand to Hand skill, it is a default if you do not choose some other type of magical skill.

I've been compiling a list of possible starting items based on skills, some basic ones are there but I still have some more to add so that as long as you choose an offensive physical or mental skill you will get a starting weapon/spell and then based on skill levels selected will get either a shield or protective spell as a secondary.

Feel free to add your suggestions to the list of what you think would be a cool starting item for a particular skill. :)

I noticed my skill doesn't level up when using my fire shield.. unless you just have to cast it many times for a small chance to go up. I'm not sure how it was changed..?

It might take it a while to go up since you wouldn't be casting that one quite as much, also if you are using the same skill to attack it might be going up while attacking.
