I used to run out of room halfway through the basement, has it been changed, or am I imagining things...

It was fixed rather than changed, your standard backpack can hold 16 individual items, stackable items are treated as individual.

ah ok, thanks for that.

Another question though...

Is there a limit to stack amount?

Not right now there is not, might have to enforce one later on down the road to reduce load times when viewing inventory but I will see how it goes.
