It's probably on your list already, but could you implement some type of keyboard inferface... mousing on everything gets a but cumbersome.... just the standard stuff for when the focus is not in a command line

<cr>- move focus to the command line
/- move focus to the command line and insert '/' into command line

w- move north
a- move west
s- move south
d- move east
q- move northwest (or get rid of the dual direction if you can tell when two keys are pressed)
e- move northeast (like 'a'+'w' would be interpreted as move northwest)
z- move southwest
c- move southeast

b- open backpack

you get the gist....
